Past Lessons, Future Theories
Last night's game was again brought to you by...no one. I was happy to see that the
Hockey Night in Canada didn't show
any commercials during the overtime in the
Leafs - Flyers game last night. Of course, I had to stay glued to the set. But I didn't mind that much, it was very good hockey.

I'm pretty happy with my results. I like being FDA-approved and an ultra-low evaporator.
This year's
Master's golf tournament was brought to you by...no one. And wasn't it nice? I think the only people who didn't like it were the announcers and commentators, who didn't get a break. The advertisers probably minded, but who cares about them? I didn't mind at all. It reminded me of the Canada - US
gold medal game at the last
Olympics.
Last night I saw the shadow of Io, one of Jupiter's moons, on the disc of Jupiter. This was the first time I have ever seen this phenomenon, so it was quite exciting. It looked a lot like
this. Shadow transits happen often on Jupiter. Many can be caught with an appropriate telescope, if you know what to look for.
I bought
Aphex Twin's 26 Mixes for Cash last week. I've finally given it a good listen. Somewhat surprising it's taken so long, since I have always been a big Aphex fan. The album compiles 26 of his mixes on two cds. This is almost, but not quite, every mix he has done. I had already heard or owned about half of them. They come from all eras of Aphex Twin's career, from the early industrial of Mescalinum United's 'We Have Arrived' to recent tracks by Nobukazu Takemura and Phillip Boa & The Voodoo Club, which are much in a wigged out drum'n'bass style. All the mixes are good, and some are great, like the Gavin Bryars' 'Raising the Titanic' mix and the absolutely fantastic techno mix of Curve's 'Falling Free'. It's a good reminder that, at his best, Aphex Twin is better than anybody else.
Philip Sherburne's needledrops is quite a good music column for all forms of modern dance music.

Reason 8703 celebrities shouldn't comment on politics. Thanks Madonna, you're the greatest. She says:
"If it's not the war in Iraq, it's any number of wars that are going on at any given time. And that dichotomy the paradox that's going on in our lives right now, 'cause on the one hand life has become so convenient for everyone," she said. "The technological advances that we've made have made everything, time, space, and motion collapse and disappear. But on the other hand there's never been more chaos in the world, and the video is like, 'Oh, ok, this is happening, what are we going to do about it?' And the video is question that I pose to everyone. And, do I think, I think in a way everything is happening perfectly? And it's synonymous, there's a poetry to it, I mean I was planning this video and the concept last November and I didn't know we were going to where we are right now at the time of the release of my album."
As a journalist myself, I'm quite embarrassed by
Bob Steele's comments in this article. Doctors should treat those in need of assistance, and if he's the specialist on the scene, I think he should treat someone who needs his help.
Today and tomorrow are your last chance to listen to DJ Shadow's
Essential mix. It's a very cool mix old hip hop.
