  A favourite blogger denied tenure
Sean Carroll, author of Preposterous Universe, has been denied tenure. I don't feel qualified to comment on his research, and the often personal and political reasons why he was denied tenure, but basically, it's mean he's out of a (day) job.

I have enjoyed his blog a lot in the past few months, and it is one of the few I read more than once a week. He explains physics and cosmology very well, which, I know from experience, is not easy.

I feel bad for him. It was a big blow to him, since he thought he was going to get it.

However, in the comment section, he already has a (serious?) job offer from Nobel Prize winner, David Gross. It seems he will find a new position soon.

Mother's Day = Show Me the Money!
Against my better judgment, I was watching CTV's morning show today, and I wasn't disappointed in their regular displays of stupidity.

This time, the culprit was a guest, not a host. Karen Mallett was flogging various products for Mother's Day. Apparently the hordes of "fashionista moms" out there want handbags and makeup.

After Mallett was done pimping the manufacturer's products, the host asked her what she wanted most for Mother's Day. "A gift card." At least she was honest.
