  Mobilee Records' fall releases
Mobilee Records, a German techno and house label founded by Anja Schneider, has had a lot of releases this fall, celebrating its two year anniversary. Here’s the lowdown on their double cd called “Back to Back” and remix packages.

First up is a cd of nine Mobilee singles, none of which have been available on cd before. On a track by track basis, I really like Sebo K’s “Moved”, which is a nice deep house beginning to the compilation. Prosumer’s vocals help keep the vibe going. Anja Schneider is up next, with a heavily looped techno track. It’s good for Djing, but hard to sit through otherwise. Sleeper Thief’s “Full of You” is an interesting minimal track. Exercise One, with “Debaya”, as always, are a bit more propulsive than anything they find around them. Anja Schneider and Sebo K follow with Rancho Relaxo, which is probably the label’s best known release to date, having been played by many DJs and included on several compilations. It’s heavily looped, with an down-up-down-up melody permeating the whole track. In the middle, Detroit-style strings complete the track with some good harmonies. A useful DJ track for sure. Pan-Pot’s “P.O. Box” is deep and rumbly. Gummi HZ brings some weirdness and experimentation with “Isolate”, which is mildly creepy and atonal, and some big sweeping synths. Next is Anja Schneider and Sebo K again, with “Lily of the Valley” another one of Mobilee’s bigger singles. It’s got a looped melody that could be annoying in large doses. Pan Pot finishes the disc with a dose of weirdness, “Black Widow”. It’s quirky and minimal.

The companion disc is a mix of eight remixed Mobilee tracks by Anja Schneider. You can see some of the tracks above in new forms and as they were intended – in a DJ set. I like it. The mixing is smooth and the tracks are well chosen and sequenced.

Mobilee has also released a series of remixes. On Volume 1, Sebo K gives GummiHZ’s “Illuminate” even more loops, and then Prosumer go deep on Sebo K’s “Moved”, dubbing it in an even deeper track than the original.

On Volume 2, Pan Pot provides the best remix of the bunch, with a wicked rework of “Lily of the Valley”. Great percussion. I love the snare drums and the rumbly bass. GummiHz’s remix of “Addicted” is minimal and clunky, and really only for people who like their music more experimental.

On Volume 3, Jesse Rose does two mixes of Pan Pot’s “Black Dog”. His “Pot and Pans edit” is better. Exercise One follows with a mix of “Horizons”. It’s a good techno track.

The double cd is out this week. Some of the remix singles have already been released, others will follow.

  Trailer Park Boys movie review
I went to the Trailer Parks Boys movie last week. It was sort of average, not especially good or bad. I laughed, but it wasn't the funniest thing I've ever seen or heard. I think my audience wasn't the greatest, I laughed out loud more than most other people.

I guess I was expecting more, sort of like the way the South Park movie really eclipsed the show. The TPB movie didn't. I would say any episode from season 3 (my favourite) is better than the movie.

I'm glad they did it and I'm glad I saw it. I'm also glad I went on the $4.20 night (who wants to explain that coincidence?), instead of the regular price.

Go see it anyways. I bet I'd like it more the second time.

Next up: Borat!

Phil

Pluses:

Julian's girlfriend was pretty hot.
After many episodes with male nudity, finally, some female nudity.
Cory and Trevor's fuckup is pretty good.
Not enough drinking and dope smoking.

Minuses: (some are spoilers, so close your eyes if you don't want it spoiled.)

Sarah, J-Roc, Tyrone and Barbara are hardly in it.
Ricky never really flies off the handle and does something really stupid, which is a big minus.
Jacob working at the movie theater, of course.
They replaced Trinity. I understand they'd have to, but they could at least have gotten a blonde.
Not enough Randy, Mr. Lahey and George Green.

  Amazing image of Antennae Galaxies

The Hubble Space Telescope has taken a very impressive image of the Antennae Galaxy. These two galaxies are colliding and merging. As they do this, it triggers a wave of star formation (the bright patches) as clouds of gas are disturbed and compressed.

I made the thumbnail small on purpose, so you can be really surprised by the full size image.

  Michael Mayer - Immer 2

I've been waiting for Michael Mayer's Immer 2 for a long time. I loved Immer 1, which came out in 2002, and was hoping he would do another, similar mix. Well, my wishes have been answered.

I've listened to Immer 2 a few times now, and it's nearly as good as 1, which is one of my all-time favourite mixes, easily in the top ten.

Immer 2 starts off smoky and foggy, with some hissy and muffled tracks from Someone Else, Ian Simmonds, and Brooks. The tracks are all deep and enjoyable and it's nearly impossible to tell where they are mixed.

Then, it's time to get pick up the tempo a little into some real dancefloor grooves, courtesy some funky tracks from Justus Koehncke, Frank West and Lindstrom.

After these very energetic tracks, he keeps up the pace and moves into some experimental but danceable grooves from the Rice Twin's swinging "For Dan", and SCSI-9's "Morskaya", which has to be one of the most underrated and underplayed tracks of 2006. Appearing on this mix will undoubtedly change that.

After that it's time to bring the mix to a close, with some melodic anthems. First up is Jesse Somfay's "Lying in a Bed of Mist", a spacy piece with a driving beat and tinkling bells. Then it's Sten's remix of DK7's "Where's the Fun?", which has a more traditional house feel, with some nice vocals. Mayer could have ended the mix right here and people would have been perfectly happy, but there's still one more long track to go, Supermayer's (a collaboration between Superpitcher and Mayer) remix of Geiger's "Good Evening".

Is it as good as Immer 1? I think so. It's probably 97% of Immer 1, and that's much better than most of the other mixes out there. I keep choosing to listen to it, and with all the other music being released this fall, that actually means something.

Immer 2 will be released on October 30 by the label Mayer helped found and still runs, Kompakt. There will be a limited edition cd that contains a coded card that will instruct you on how to download a special compilation of Immer bonus tracks. The tracks are Mayer's personal favourites, but are not on the mix. They are a mixed bag of eight tracks, some are quite strange, some are good, some are really good.

  Nobel Prize for gene silencing
And the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine goes to Mello and Fire, for discovering RNA silencing. The only shocking thing is how quickly it happened: 8 years since the discovery was published. Most Nobel Prizes take much longer to arrive, even though the original prizes were meant to be handed out for the year's best research. Fullness of time, blah, blah, blah.

Decades of research by dozens of physicists all boils down to this picture of variations in the cosmic microwave background and a Nobel Prize. Awesome stuff.

  Mark Foley, pre-September quotes
a few internet searches of "Mark Foley", pre-September 2006.

From house.gov:

FOLEY LEGISLATION OVERHAULING AND STRENGTHENING SEX OFFENDER PENALTIES INCLUDED IN ADAM WALSH CHILD SAFETY ACT OF 2005

July 21, 2006
WASHINGTON
- Congressman Mark Foley (R-FL), Co-chairman of the Missing and Exploited Children Caucus, applauded Senate passage of legislation he authored and introduced overhauling our nation’s sex offender registration and notification laws.
“For too long our nation has tracked library books better than it has sex offenders. That day is coming to an end,” said Foley. “Senator Hatch and Leader Frist have been resolute in keeping this legislation on track. We are closing loopholes that sex offenders and pedophiles have used to prey on children.”

Oops!

From issues2000.org:

Rated 84% by the Christian Coalition: a pro-family voting record.Foley scores 84% by the Christian Coalition on family issues.

Double Oops!

From atheism.about.com:

Mark Foley Targets Nudists

In an apparent bid to raise his standing among conservatives and improve his chances at inning the U.S. Senate seat held by Bob Graham, U.S. Representative Mark Foley of Florida has launched an attack on a nudist camp sponsored by the American Association for Nude Recreation which caters to teens. Named Lake Como, it's operation is legal because under Florida law, public nudity is allowed as long as it is not lewd.

But Foley wants to change that and sees nothing "wholesome" about nudists and nudity. For Foley, nudity is about sex and allowing teens to run around naked will only inflame passions. He would rather they be covered up and ashamed of their bodies than to have a way to learn to be comfortable with who they are.
Just weird.
