March 2007 promo mix up
I have a new promo mix available for download. You can download it
here. I would describe it as melodic techno at the beginning and end, with some weirder stuff in the middle. It's about 96 MB and 71 minutes long. It's also much better than a typical Swoon show.

Postnatal disease testing
The state of Wisconsin
tests all newborns for
27 genetic diseases, at a cost of $69.50. Many of these are quite rare, but dangerous.
Nearly all are incredible mouthfuls. There are ones I'd expect there, like phenylketonuria (see any can of diet pop), cystic fibrosis, and a few I've never heard of, like Dienoyl-CoA Reductase Deficiency, Medium/Short Chain Hydroxyacyl-CoA Dehydrogenase Deficiency,
Argininosuccinic Acidemia, and
Maple Syrup Urine Disease, which may sound cool, but you wouldn't want it.

The Black Dog - Book of Dogma
Soma Records is re-issuing all of the early
Black Dog eps. Yay! I already bought it from
bleep. 22 tracks for $9.99. Pretty hard to go wrong. There are many great tracks, especially Ambience With Teeth, Vanttool, Virtual, and more. Anybody who listens to my show regularly has heard these and more. I think I will just quote part of the Bleep mailout, since it says what I'd want to say:
Terms like seminal and legendary get bandied around in the music industry so much that they've lost their meaning. The Black Dog though are one of the few electronica acts of the past twenty years who genuinely deserve those epithets. Emerging from the wreckage of rave in the late eighties, their unique take on the breakbeat sound was initally a little too different for the ever cautious music industry, with no outlet for their music the band released their first 3 EPs on their own label. Of course the world soon came round to their way of thinking and by the time Warp released Bytes as part of the Artificial Intelligence series they were already being hailed as the nascent genre's leading lights.
The Black
Dog - Book Of Dogma (Soma)
If you hear a loud wailing and gnashing today it's probably just the sound of people who have recently blown 3 figure sums on EBay for these early Black Dog productions realising they could have waited for this fully re-mastered package. Bringing together for the first time the 3 EPs released on their own Black Dog Productions label ('Virtual', 'Age of Slack' and 'Techno Playtime') and the 'Parallel' compilation that later came out on GPR, the tracks contained within showcase a post-hardcore sound as the band looked beyond the then prevailing rave scene and it's self imposed limitations. Mixing elements of detroit techno, UK breakbeat and rave, dub and electro The Black Dog created their own unique sound and whilst some of these early tunes may sound a little rough around the edges they have an energy and vitality that still shines through today.

Flow 93.5 is staffed by chickens
I was listening to
Flow 93.5 in my car this morning, and they were playing a grandiose advertisement for "Sex and Steak" day, March 14th. However, it's actually "
Steak and Blowjob" day, you chickens.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised, most of the songs they play are so edited for swearing that many of them don't even make sense.

The Field - From Here We Go Sublime

In some quarters, this is a highly anticipated techno album. The
Field is known for making repetitive, insistent techno. For some people, this kind of music can be downright irritating, for others it is quite appealing.
This album has many similarities with The Field's
previous eps on Kompakt. The track that begins the album, "Over The Ice", comes from his most recent. It is chugging techno with strings and female vocal snippets that are cut up and stuttered. It sounds like a lot of techno and trance, but The Field uses unusual chord progressions that don't appear in dance music often.
The next track, "A Paw In My Face", also comes from the same ep. It's good, and a bit smoother and less aggressive than the opener. It has a cheery guitar melody.
An original track to this album, "God Things End", is certainly the deepest on the album. It's fast and bass-heavy. "The Little Heart Beats So Fast" with a bassline that is downright funky.
"Everday" is another techno track, although it's fast, it's simple and has a more laid-back feel than some of the earlier tracks, with some cheery female vocal (cut-up, of course).
For the rest of the album (four more tracks), you can pretty much get the picture. It's Field-style techno, just like everything that's come before, except for the ambient ending.
And as a Field album, it's good. So if you like his previous releases, you will like this. If you've had a mild interest in his previous releases, you should give this a try, because there is enough diversity that you can probably find something you will like. If you don't like The Field, you won't like this album.
It will be released March 26 on Kompakt.
