Past Lessons, Future Theories
Housewatch, episode 4.1
I've decided to start explaining (or trying to) episodes of
House, M.D. I like the show, medicine and Hugh Laurie.
Now,
last night's episode was a case of mistaken identity. Not very medical.
Perhaps the most interesting medical hypothesis was
crush syndrome, which I had never heard of. Basically, you get crushed by a building or other heavy object and unsurprisingly, it's not very good for you. It's common after earthquakes, but was first described during the Blitz, in London, (
Bywaters EGL, Beall D. Crush injuries with impairment of renal function. BMJ 1941; 1: 427-32.) when buildings were falling left and right.During
crush syndrome, the large muscles of the body get compressed. Cutting off the blood supply causes cells to weaken, since they don't have the energy to maintain themselves, and they release potassium, phosphate, enzymes and the muscle protein myoglobin into the bloodstream. Ultimately, it's bad for the kidneys. But the brain and muscles can suffer too, often leading to amputation of a limb.
The patient also had
acute respiratory distress syndrome. It's a little less interesting. When you have lots of other problems, it's not very surprising that the lungs get a little stressed and can fail when they fill with fluid.

Lee Burridge - Balance 012
Lee Burridge is the latest dj to do a mix for the
Balance series, which is one of the premier mix series for progressive house and techno fans. Burridge's mix spans three cds, which can be classified as melodic techno, amelodic techno and chugging techno. In short, it's a fine mix of the modern techno scene. (Needless to say, it's mixed very well. Burridge has always had fine technique.)
Disc one covers the melodic tracks, with numbers from
Ripperton and Lazy Fat People, The Viewers,
Kollektive Turmstrasse and others. If you like those bands, you'll like the disc.
I first thought disc two was all minimal, but I was wrong. It's techno with any melodies replaced by noises. So there's no thing, reedy sounds, it's still chunky and funky, but it's all bleeps and bloops, not strings and bass. The best tracks are
Reynold's "Bumper" and Spider & Bird's "Paris", which bump and clank around.
Finally, disc three is chugging techno. It's probably the fastest of the three discs. Here, it's mostly about the beats. There are great tracks from Tomas Andersson,
Alexi Delano & Xpansul, and Gabriel Ananda.
Each week, I find I have a different favourite disc. They're all good, I guess it's my mood that's making me prefer one or another. But if you're interested in modern techno, this is highly recommended

The price of diamonds
I was reading
this story on a very popular evangelistic American preacher who may have been assaulted by her husband, which mentioned in her wedding a few years back she was given a 7.66-carat diamond.
I was curious as to how much a diamond like that costs. A quick search of
bluenile.com gave me a range of $93,774 to $775,832. (They actually didn't have a 7.66-carat diamond, they peaked at 7.63.) That's a lot of cash for a preacher. Even a double income preacher household.
