  Housewatch episode 4.12
Last night's solution to House was incredibly easy to understand, so I'll focus a bit on physiology instead.

The woman (Sarah Silverman's sister for those of you not watching the credits) had nephroptosis, or floating kidney. Everytime she stood up, her kidney slid down lower into her pelvis. She lost blood pressure, and she fainted and her breathing stopped. It's called orthostatic hypotension. The kidney is suspended in the pelvis by connective tissue. It can move easier than most organs. Since we can bend at the waist, this is a good thing.

So, why were they saying everything was backwards? In a healthy person, when you stand up your heart rate and blood pressure go up a little. If they didn't, you'd faint. With the head now above the heart, it takes more work to get blood to the brain, so the heart pushes a little harder, and then circulatory system tightens up a little, so the blood is less likely to trickle backwards.

Mobilee - Back to Back 2

Mobilee has released its second compilation. Like the first, it's two discs, the first unmixed, the second mixed. GummiHz is in charge of the compilation and mixing.

This compilation showcases how Mobilee has evolved since the first Back to Back. Where the first compilation was mostly tech-house, this compilation features much more variety. On the unmixed disc there are different genres, ranging from Pan Pot's laid back housy "Faces", to the unusual minimalism of Sleeper Thief's "Cenotes". In between, there are quality tracks from label owner Anja Schneider, with "Belize", the omnipresent Sebo K's "Too Hot", and two exclusives from GummiHz, (real name Alexander Tsotsos).

On the first disc, I like "Faces", Marc Antona's heavily-looped "One More Sugar" and "Cenotes" best.

On the mix, GummiHz pulls together 27 tracks from Mobilee's back catalog. As you'd expect from so many tracks, they go by pretty quickly, and there's often three playing at the same time. But GummiHz is a skilled mixer/editor, and there are plenty of fine moments in the mix, if you are a fan of German minimal, tech-house and techno. I am, so I enjoyed it a lot.

  Roegones vs. Vogons
It turns out Roegone's (crazed anti-choice 527 group) have a lot in common with Vogons.

Vogons (from wikipedia):

According to the series, far back in prehistory, when the first primeval Vogons crawled out of the sea, the forces of evolution were so disgusted with them that they never allowed them to evolve again. Through sheer stubbornness, though, the Vogons survived, wrecked the planet, and emigrated en masse to the Megabrantis cluster, where they form most of the Galactic bureaucracy, most notably in the famous Vogon Constructor Fleets (which allows them a socially-acceptable way to spend their time demolishing things).

Roegones:

"THEY STARTED A FIGHT WE PLAN TO FINISH." [sic]

But really, I just wanted to be the first to have Roegones and Vogons in the same post.

  Periodic table as prints
Nature's The Great Beyond blog points out a periodic table made by print makers. A lot of them are cool, especially since it's hard to inspired by Praseodymium and Cesium (below).

Wired also had an article on alternative periodic tables two years ago.

  Anna's hummingbird
Nature's The Great Beyond blog has an interesting post about the Anna's hummingbird. It seems its mating calls are generated by its tail, not its mouth or wings. It's a (so far) new and unique way of bird communication.

Journal article in Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
