Sasha interview

I interviewed Sasha a few weeks ago to talk about his new Invol2ver album. The transcript of the interview is below. You can also listen to it here. The audio file contains the interview with tracks from Invol2ver and the emFire collection mixed underneath. Sasha is touring North America this fall and will be at the Guvernment in Toronto on November 8.

Philip Downey: Your new Invol2ver album is out, and it fits in between artist album, remix project and DJ mix. Can you explain a bit more about it?

Sasha: The new Invol2ver album is a sort of hybrid album, between a compilation album and artist album. There's about five original tracks on the album and all the others have been remixed by us as well. It's all about trying to find the elements to create a perfect 70-minute mix compilation. It's what I've always tried to do. But now, with the technology I can get in the studio and pull people's records apart, and rebuild them in things like Ableton, and it means you can get each moment perfect on the record. Or you try too, anyway.

Philip: Most of the tracks you selected, came from the last two or three years of releases?

Sasha: Right.

Philip: Some of the tracks I already knew, like Telefon Tel Aviv and Apparat. To me it's not like you just added beats to them, they were real reconstructions.

Sasha: Yes, we remixed all the songs. Some we took further away from the originals than others. Some of the songs, the original parts are so good we just put sounds behind them and let the original parts come through, but then other mixes, like the Ladytron track for example, we just used a snippet of the vocal and really built our own track beneath it. So it just depends, each track is different.

Philip: In the studio, this was you, Charlie May and others?

Sasha: Yes, Charlie May, Duncan Forbes, the guys from Spooky, they're old friends of mine, then Barry Jamieson, who engineered the album used to be in a band called Evolution, and then just lots of other people. A guy called Leo Leite who did a lot of the drum programming. We just had people come in and help on certain aspects. It was definitely a collaborative team project.

Philip: And was it a month of hard work or was it spread over a long time?

Sasha: God, I wish it took a month! No, it was like six months of work. If I could muck out an album like this in a month's time I'd be a very rich man.

Philip: What have you heard from fellow DJs and artists about this release?

Sasha: It's been really positive, the sales have been great considering the state of the music industry. It was #1 in the UK and U.S. iTunes dance charts. Critically too, a lot of the reviews have been really strong, so I think it's been received really well. I think in general, people have really been into it. It's great, I'm used to having my records received with a fairly lukewarm attitude, but a few months down the line people start to say how much they like it. Usually it doesn't happen right away that people say they like it.

Philip: So it's instantly grabbed a lot of people?

Sasha: Yes, I think it's a bit different from everything else that's out there at the moment. As well, I think most DJ mix compilations have gone down a certain route the last couple of years. I guess it's different from what else is available, so people really warmed to it.

Philip: You mentioned Ableton was a big part of making this album, it's also for your live sets as well, is that something you're continuing with?

Sasha: Yes, that's definitely become my favourite. It's great to have the same format that I use to play out live as the same format in my studio. There's definitely a lot of times on the album where I set my computer up just as if DJing, and I just started jamming ideas over the top of some of the tracks we were working on, when we were struggling sometime.

Philip: It's a program I've used as well and it really is so easy to change things around.

Sasha: Yes, it's a very flexible program.

Philip: I think I remember hearing during your spring tour of North America, that your Maven controller died. Is it back in action?

Sasha: In Miami, there was some kind of short circuit within it – that was the end of that. There was something inside that got loose and shorted out. It got sent, it got fixed and double-checked, so that's not going to happen again. It's the only problem I've ever had with this one.

Philip: I'm near Toronto, and we missed you this spring. Something happened, you didn't get there.

Sasha: Yes, disaster, my passport went missing. I don't know if it was stolen or I misplaced it, but somewhere between Miami and driving up to Canada it went missing. It had all my work visa stuff in it so I couldn't cross the border. I had to fly home. They basically dropped me off in the middle of nowhere, because we only realized about 30 miles away from the border what was happening. So they dropped me off in the middle of nowhere and I had to make my way back to Detroit, and basically I had to catch a flight back to England and go to the embassy and get a new passport and get my visas worked out and then get back to Seattle for the tuesday night. It was a real mess.

Philip: That's a lot to manage, crossing oceans and getting to gigs.

Sasha: It was a week away from the end of the tour, so I was pretty exhausted already. It definitely made the last few days of the tour a little difficult for me.

Philip: How did this summer's Ibiza season go?

Sasha: It was really good for me. I mean, the opening of Space was one of the best parties I've done in Ibiza for a long time and there were some great events – Amnesia, Space, just a really good summer for me, the music, the kind of music I play, it's been a really good year for me.

Philip: You're married and have a son now, is that correct?

Sasha: Yes.

Philip: How has that changed your touring and artistic outlook?

Sasha: It hasn't.

Philip: No? So you're still getting out the same amount?

Sasha: Yes. Obviously I took time off when that was happening, but I've had the busiest year I've had in a long time.

Philip: What are you looking forward to for this fall tour through North America?

Sasha: It's going to be good to get back to the States after a really great summer in Europe, and I'm feeling inspired. Of course, I missed the Toronto show, so I'm looking forward to coming there and reconnecting with the crowd. After the release of the album people are going to know that music now, and it's going to be fun to come to the States and drop some of those tracks off the Invol2ver record.

Philip: So you're still using them, you haven't put them away. I'll be looking forward to the Toronto show. In the spring I wanted to hear Coma really loud, live.

Sasha: Yes, we've got some new mixes of that done so I'll be playing some of that on the tour for sure.

Philip: I'll be looking forward to that in November. Thank you very much.

Sasha: Thanks for your support.

Behrouz - Pure Behrouz NYC

San Francisco DJ Behrouz has a new double-cd mix out today. It's called Pure Behrouz NYC, and it's quite good. Roughly, disc one is house, disc two is melodic techno. But there's a good degree of overlap.

On cd one, some of the highlights Studio Aparment's "I'm In Love", Scope's "Strung Out", Manuel Tur's dub of Nick Holder's "Time", and Milton Jackson and Sei A's "Glasgow Kiss", which helps take the final 20 minutes of disc one in a melodic, progressive house direction. Overall it's a groovy house mix. There aren't many peak-time monsters designed to raise the roof, but I have no problem a room full of people having a good time dancing to it.

On cd two, the tracks I like best are from Aril Brikkha, Gregor Tresher and Nu Frequency. It starts deep and stays that way for most of the cd. Somewhat surpisingly, it lightens up near the end instead of going for a big, dramatic conclusion.

Overall, it's an interesting and well-chosen mix, especially if you are looking for something melodic, danceable, and definitely not minimal.

Onur Ozer - Watergate 01

Onur Ozer made a name for himself last year with his jazzy take on the minimal scene, which resulted in a well-regarded album for Vakant records. Now, he has a mix album coming out on July 21, called Watergate 01. Unsurprisingly, this mix is minimal, with tracks drawing influences from other genres, such as jazz and deep house.

On the ultraminimal side, we have Cabanne and Sammy Dee, best known for their Perlon work, and on the stranger side are Cassy, Jens Zimmermann and taking the cake with a really weird throbbing breakdown, Patrice Baumel.

The funkiest tracks are Dewalta's "Salgaro", which opens the album, Cassy's "April" (if you can handle the repetition), and Mimosa's "Sensitiva" (a collaboration between Ozer and Tobi Neumann).

Overall, it's a funky, minimal ride. There aren't any clicky tracks, these all have bass lines,
and there is some kind of melody to most of them, but they certainly aren't the kind of tunes you're going to be humming along with.

The mix has its ups and downs, in the sense that there seem to be different sections with varying energy levels, which is good. It's not a mindless plod through a bunch of new tracks. I like it, but it may not have too much appeal outside the techno and minimal scenes.

The Mole - As High As The Sky

As High As The Sky is The Mole's debut album. The Mole is Colin Le Plant, a Montreal-based producer. Most of his singles are long, heavily-looped house music. This made me a little leery of a full length album. I was wrong, since the tracks have plenty of variety and aren't long enough to wear out their welcome.

Things get started with "Still In My Corner", a lazy house track with a blippy melody. The soul gets injected right after that, as a male voice introduces "Ain't The Way It's Supposed To Be", with a sampled bassline, and looped strings. It takes a while to get going, but once it does, it's pretty funky.

"Alice You Need Him" takes things into a breakbeat-oriented, electronic groove. Its complicated melody makes it one of the better tracks on the album.

"Hey Girl (You're The One)" begins what I would call the big room tracks, which are more upbeat and designed to stoke the dancefloor. The distorted bass and the funky percussion signal it's one for the floor. It's followed by "Baby You're The One", which has been shortened from its single length for the album. Don't worry, you're not missing much. This seven-minute version is all you need for mixing or enjoyment, and is still one of the most energetic on this album.

"Gracias a los Ninos" takes things down a notch, with a more techno, slower sound. "Like The Way" comes next, which more percussion, than anything else. "Smiling and Running" follows it, and takes things down a notch with a looped synth melody calming things down. "Knock Twice" is even more laidback, and brings back the breakbeats and some housier soul music.

Finally, "When It Tastes So Good" finishes this enjoyable album with a gentle, jazzy house track.

It will be released May 26, on Wagon Repair.

Grand Cru 2008

Connaisseur is a German record label, with a solid, if brief history of releasing melodic techno. Grand Cru 2008 is their second label compilation. The first disc is 11 individual tracks, while the second is a 10-track mix by label owner Alex Flitsch.

The first cd features, um, melodic techno. It's easier to point out the non-melodic tracks, which are Patrick Chardronnet's "Percussiontrack" and Sebastian Roya's "Contracorrient", which are more percussive than melodic. The rest are all melodic, modern and groovy. The tracks by Estroe, Federleicht and Kollektiv Turmstrasse are my favourites.

The second cd is a mix of Connaisseur tracks. Stylistically, it sounds much like the unmixed tracks of cd one. My favourites are Estroe's "Driven", Rekleiner's "Dos Caminos", and the long, drawn-out finale, Daniel Stefanik's remix of Ripperton's "Zugunruhe". It's smooth and surprisingly laidback. I doubt it even approaches 130 bpm.

These are high quality tracks, which makes both discs very easy to like.

It will be released on May 28.

Mobilee - Back to Back 2

Mobilee has released its second compilation. Like the first, it's two discs, the first unmixed, the second mixed. GummiHz is in charge of the compilation and mixing.

This compilation showcases how Mobilee has evolved since the first Back to Back. Where the first compilation was mostly tech-house, this compilation features much more variety. On the unmixed disc there are different genres, ranging from Pan Pot's laid back housy "Faces", to the unusual minimalism of Sleeper Thief's "Cenotes". In between, there are quality tracks from label owner Anja Schneider, with "Belize", the omnipresent Sebo K's "Too Hot", and two exclusives from GummiHz, (real name Alexander Tsotsos).

On the first disc, I like "Faces", Marc Antona's heavily-looped "One More Sugar" and "Cenotes" best.

On the mix, GummiHz pulls together 27 tracks from Mobilee's back catalog. As you'd expect from so many tracks, they go by pretty quickly, and there's often three playing at the same time. But GummiHz is a skilled mixer/editor, and there are plenty of fine moments in the mix, if you are a fan of German minimal, tech-house and techno. I am, so I enjoyed it a lot.

WEMF report

I took quite a few pictures at the WEMF, but this is the one I like most. One woman, dancing by herself, as an intellibeam sweeps by.

I arrived on Friday night, and checked in slowly, just like everybody else. They really needed separate lanes for those who had preregistered and those who were paying.

Highlights of that night included, Chris Liberator, Freaky Flow, Ladies Take Control, and most of all, Pendulum, who were great.

I didn't camp, and came back on Saturday. That night, I enjoyed Hatiras and Mix Master Mike most of all. I was too tired to stay late for MSTRKRFT.

A few other notes:

  • I was surprised I didn't feel too old. Older, but not oldest.
  • Most DJs are still using vinyl. I thought digital would have dominated. But of course a few laptops and cds were present. I think Mix Master Mike was using Serato and two 1200s, but I'm not sure.
  • Kids don't dress up the way they used to. There were a few freaks of course, but not as many as the old days.
  • I am too old for the hard dance arena. Everytime I walked by its building, it was either a jackhammer kickdrum, or an endless snare. Always above 150 bpm, of course.

All in all, a good festival.

Shut Up and Dance

Five long tracks here, on a compilation that is not designed to be danced to by the average punter, but rather by professional dancers and ballet troupes.

First up is NSI, with "Bridge and Tunnel People". It's a 14-minute ambient piece, with no beats until three minutes in. At the point the beats kick and pop with irregular beats, and stabby, chopped melodies. It's very bass heavy. In the middle it breaks up into random, abstract sounds before returning to a jazz-influenced section, with plenty of work on the ride cymbal and cowbell. It's pretty intense.

Next is Sleeparchive, with a buzzy, slower minimal techno track. There's a lot of acidic noises. Not bad if you like that style.

Ame centres the compilation with "Fiori", which has been creating a huge buzz. The 17-minute track begins with a long, beatless opening, before the beats kick in around 8 minutes. From there, it's a long, epic progressive house track. Is it like Rej, which destroyed dancefloors everywhere last year? Yes, it's big and it's quality, but it's not quite as catchy.

Luciano follows Ame with the most club-friendly track, the techno "Drunken Ballet". It's fairly straightforward, and not as complex as some of his recent productions and collaborations. But the vocal and melody samples are chopped up in an interesting, cute way that will bring a smile to your face.

Luke Slater, working under his The 7th Plain pseudonym, ends the album with a long ambient piece, "Symphony for the Surrealists". It's pretty much a symphony, with different movements. At the beginning, the strings are quite lush, and are underpinned by breathy choir sounds and gentle synths. Then it breaks up and goes a little crazy, with bleeps, reversed blips, clicks and other sounds. Then comes a piano interlude, before it goes into icy ambience, and finishes with some experimental beats. It's a very good piece.

Overall, it's great a selection of modern dance music. I like it a lot and think the best tracks are from Ame, NSI and Luke Slater.

The plan is for the Staatsballet Berlin to perform live to these tracks on June 29, in Berlin at th Berghain club. Sounds like a very interesting show.

It will be out as an album on May 29, 2007, on the Ostgut record label.

Luke Fair - Balance 011

Luke Fair is the latest dj from the progressive house scene to do a mix for the Balance series. His two cd mix is very good. When I received my copy I knew some of the artists but did not know a single track, so I wasn't sure what I was in for.

CD1 starts off in a mild mood, and then picks up into a fine house mix. Some of the standout tracks are King Britt's mix of Rich Medina's "Can't Hold Back", which features a great chord loop, Wamdue Project's funky "Home Planet", and Acca's spacy "Rain". In the second half, it gets a little more energetic, with David Holmes "69 Police", Kinka's "Burnin", Nightrider's saxophone bomb "Getaway". Overall, I prefer the first half to the second. It holds together a bit more, and I just like the tracks better.

CD2 is a little more of the progressive sound, and a bit faster. There's some serious funk from Dusk and Prayd, Elektrochemie, and Klmnt. The ending is quite fantastic. The last four tracks, from Marnix, Subtech, Michell and Humate bring things to a wonderful, exciting ending.

Both cds are very melodic, but they never descend into cheesy or excessively weepy territory. It's one of the best Balance releases in the last year or two.

I have a new promo mix available for download. You can download it here. I would describe it as melodic techno at the beginning and end, with some weirder stuff in the middle. It's about 96 MB and 71 minutes long. It's also much better than a typical Swoon show.

Gui Boratto - Chromophobia

Gui Boratto's Chromophobia comes out today, and it is an album that is certainly worth checking out. The Brazilian producer has released many noteworthy eps, singles and remixes in the past two years.

This album, his debut full-length, has plenty of variety and fits together well as a complete album. It's not just a bunch of dance tracks slammed together.

The album begins with "Scene", a tinkly ambient opening. It moves quickly into "Mr. Decay", a minimal techno track. "Terminal" comes next with a little more electro-funk, followed by "Gate 7", a pure techno track I have never been able to get into.

The techno continues, with "Shebang" another good track with a looped melody and shuffly percussion. "Chromophobia" follows with more techno, and less melody. "The Blessing" keeps the techno coming, with more complicated percussion.

"Mala Strana" then divides the album, with a short ambient interlude. After this, things calm down. "Acrostico" is gentle electronica, and after that is "Xilo", a short trip back into slower, bleepy techno.

Then comes "Beautiful Life", which is an excellent vocal track. I hope it will be played in many, many dance clubs, because it's great.

The album is then wrapped up with "Hera", a fine electrohouse track, and "The Verdict", a spacy, slow, electronica ending.

If you want to cherry-pick tracks, "Beautiful Life", "Hera" and "Shebang" are my favourites. But it's all good. It's also out today on Kompakt.

Tobias Becker - Trallafitti

Tobias Becker is the owner of the Platzhirsch record label, which released the biggest dancefloor hit of 2006, Gabriel Ananda's "Doppelwhipper (Live)". Trallafitti is Becker's mix cd, highlighting modern techno from many different labels, like Wagon Repair, Spectral, Soma and others from the minimal and traditional scenes.

Simply, the first half is minimal tech-house. It's somewhat experimental, with lots of clunks and bangs, and few basslines. The second half, beginning with Audion's "Hot Air", is where the tempo picks up and the basslines and melodies begin to appear.

Personally, I find the first half to be a little slow, and not very funky. The second is quite good, with a lot of interesting tracks from Marco Carola, Shed and Taksi.
You also get an extremely nice bonus cd: nine tracks from the Platzhirsch label. Three are from Gabriel Ananda, including Doppelwhipper, which, incidentally, is the B-side of Miracelwhop, also included, and Tropophonie, an older, pounding techno track. The six other tracks are all proper techno from Rocco Branco and Jason Emsley.
It's released today, on Platzhirsch.

Jeff Samuel - Step

The thought of an entire album's worth of Trapez's typically weird glitches (which I like in small doses) made me think I was in for a brutal listening experience, but I was wrong. Jeff Samuel's Step album is actually very smooth tech-house, and a very enjoyable listen.

The album starts out in a strong techno style with "Those Were The Days". It's a great, punchy opening. It's got the electrohouse bassline so many tracks have this year, plus a nice soft synth melody.
"Right Then and There", "The Cave" and "Night Ride" are proper, modern tech-house tracks. Not clicky, not minimal, just simple electronic house.

"You Will Never Know" and "Month to Month" are among the grooviest tracks, which work simple melodies and noises to make very successful tracks.

To break up all the four-on-the-floor, is the downtempo groover "Just Try". It's got some interesting farty noises. "Power Ballard" is slower, with cute percussion.

"Off the Mark" is the only weak track.

It all ends with "I Think They Are Trying To Say Something", which works a lovely harp loop through many variations, while accompanied by soft synth chords and cleverly processed percussion. It's one of the highlights of the album.

Overall, it's a classy album. Released on November 13.
