Onur Ozer - Watergate 01

Onur Ozer made a name for himself last year with his jazzy take on the minimal scene, which resulted in a well-regarded album for Vakant records. Now, he has a mix album coming out on July 21, called Watergate 01. Unsurprisingly, this mix is minimal, with tracks drawing influences from other genres, such as jazz and deep house.

On the ultraminimal side, we have Cabanne and Sammy Dee, best known for their Perlon work, and on the stranger side are Cassy, Jens Zimmermann and taking the cake with a really weird throbbing breakdown, Patrice Baumel.

The funkiest tracks are Dewalta's "Salgaro", which opens the album, Cassy's "April" (if you can handle the repetition), and Mimosa's "Sensitiva" (a collaboration between Ozer and Tobi Neumann).

Overall, it's a funky, minimal ride. There aren't any clicky tracks, these all have bass lines,
and there is some kind of melody to most of them, but they certainly aren't the kind of tunes you're going to be humming along with.

The mix has its ups and downs, in the sense that there seem to be different sections with varying energy levels, which is good. It's not a mindless plod through a bunch of new tracks. I like it, but it may not have too much appeal outside the techno and minimal scenes.

Grand Cru 2008

Connaisseur is a German record label, with a solid, if brief history of releasing melodic techno. Grand Cru 2008 is their second label compilation. The first disc is 11 individual tracks, while the second is a 10-track mix by label owner Alex Flitsch.

The first cd features, um, melodic techno. It's easier to point out the non-melodic tracks, which are Patrick Chardronnet's "Percussiontrack" and Sebastian Roya's "Contracorrient", which are more percussive than melodic. The rest are all melodic, modern and groovy. The tracks by Estroe, Federleicht and Kollektiv Turmstrasse are my favourites.

The second cd is a mix of Connaisseur tracks. Stylistically, it sounds much like the unmixed tracks of cd one. My favourites are Estroe's "Driven", Rekleiner's "Dos Caminos", and the long, drawn-out finale, Daniel Stefanik's remix of Ripperton's "Zugunruhe". It's smooth and surprisingly laidback. I doubt it even approaches 130 bpm.

These are high quality tracks, which makes both discs very easy to like.

It will be released on May 28.

Muting the Noise

Ambient music has been largely underground since its heyday in the early and mid 90s. Yes, there's been occasional releases that were good or excellent, but most producers have been innovating elsewhere. So, it's a pleasant surprise to hear so many good tracks on a new ambient compilation, Muting the Noise, on Innervisions.

The tracks all sound very modern, only a few are imitating the 90s. Like the ambient music of the 90s, they keep it very chilled.

The three best tracks are in the middle of the disc and are all quite different from each other. Ame begins the trio with "Doldrums", which combines a french horn, xylophones and other instruments for soothing, relaxing experience. Henrik Schwarz follows with "Arthur", a wonderful track with only piano, bells and a bit of bass. The melody repeats and subtly shifts throughout the track. I wonder if it was played live or programmed. Either way, it's a standout. i:cube follows with "Nuees Ardentes", a bubbly synth driven piece that sounds somewhat like Global Communications or Tangerine Dream.

Among the remaining seven tracks, Stefan Goldmann provides one of the better ones. "Life After Death" is a gently processed cello slowly examining a melody. A couple of bells complete the track. Kammerflimmer Kollektiv has the only track with vocals, "That's How The Lights Gets In". Koss presents "Negai", which sounds like a tribute to Tetsu Inoue. It's slow, delicate and spacy.

Finally, Klaus Schulz appears with the 18-minute "Invisible Musik". It was probably a coup to get him on this compilation, but it's not one of the best tracks here.

People still want like this kind of music, especially in clubs. See this mnml ssgs post, or this interview with Pole. Or read the press release for this cd:
At the beginning of the 90s it was normal to have an ambient floor on every bigger techno or house party. This culture got lost in the new millenium though - it became a niche and went more into cultural activities.
It will be released May 19.

Mobilee - Back to Back 2

Mobilee has released its second compilation. Like the first, it's two discs, the first unmixed, the second mixed. GummiHz is in charge of the compilation and mixing.

This compilation showcases how Mobilee has evolved since the first Back to Back. Where the first compilation was mostly tech-house, this compilation features much more variety. On the unmixed disc there are different genres, ranging from Pan Pot's laid back housy "Faces", to the unusual minimalism of Sleeper Thief's "Cenotes". In between, there are quality tracks from label owner Anja Schneider, with "Belize", the omnipresent Sebo K's "Too Hot", and two exclusives from GummiHz, (real name Alexander Tsotsos).

On the first disc, I like "Faces", Marc Antona's heavily-looped "One More Sugar" and "Cenotes" best.

On the mix, GummiHz pulls together 27 tracks from Mobilee's back catalog. As you'd expect from so many tracks, they go by pretty quickly, and there's often three playing at the same time. But GummiHz is a skilled mixer/editor, and there are plenty of fine moments in the mix, if you are a fan of German minimal, tech-house and techno. I am, so I enjoyed it a lot.

Shut Up and Dance

Five long tracks here, on a compilation that is not designed to be danced to by the average punter, but rather by professional dancers and ballet troupes.

First up is NSI, with "Bridge and Tunnel People". It's a 14-minute ambient piece, with no beats until three minutes in. At the point the beats kick and pop with irregular beats, and stabby, chopped melodies. It's very bass heavy. In the middle it breaks up into random, abstract sounds before returning to a jazz-influenced section, with plenty of work on the ride cymbal and cowbell. It's pretty intense.

Next is Sleeparchive, with a buzzy, slower minimal techno track. There's a lot of acidic noises. Not bad if you like that style.

Ame centres the compilation with "Fiori", which has been creating a huge buzz. The 17-minute track begins with a long, beatless opening, before the beats kick in around 8 minutes. From there, it's a long, epic progressive house track. Is it like Rej, which destroyed dancefloors everywhere last year? Yes, it's big and it's quality, but it's not quite as catchy.

Luciano follows Ame with the most club-friendly track, the techno "Drunken Ballet". It's fairly straightforward, and not as complex as some of his recent productions and collaborations. But the vocal and melody samples are chopped up in an interesting, cute way that will bring a smile to your face.

Luke Slater, working under his The 7th Plain pseudonym, ends the album with a long ambient piece, "Symphony for the Surrealists". It's pretty much a symphony, with different movements. At the beginning, the strings are quite lush, and are underpinned by breathy choir sounds and gentle synths. Then it breaks up and goes a little crazy, with bleeps, reversed blips, clicks and other sounds. Then comes a piano interlude, before it goes into icy ambience, and finishes with some experimental beats. It's a very good piece.

Overall, it's great a selection of modern dance music. I like it a lot and think the best tracks are from Ame, NSI and Luke Slater.

The plan is for the Staatsballet Berlin to perform live to these tracks on June 29, in Berlin at th Berghain club. Sounds like a very interesting show.

It will be out as an album on May 29, 2007, on the Ostgut record label.

Tobias Thomas - Please Please Please

Tobias Thomas' Please Please Please is one of the least melodic mix cds I have ever heard. That's not a bad thing, I just wanted to get it out of the way up front. It's minimal, and not melodic.

The first 13 minutes are beatless and almost shapeless, with two abstract tracks from Pantha du Prince and Adolf Noise intermingled. Things pick up as Thomas eases us into some beats with Krause Duo's "Kingpult", before sliding into Johannes Heil's "Aquarius", a suitably submarine track. Then some scratchy noises bring us into Vulva String Quartett's "Wild Wild Berry".

It's followed by various techno tracks from Ricardo Villalobos, The Kooky Scientist (fun acid blippiness), and others from the minimal and techno scenes. Most of the tracks are slower, and as I mentioned before, have no melody to speak of, at least not one that is hummable.

After this section, the speed picks up abruptly, with tracks from Thomas Burger, Reinhard Voigt, and less well known minimal and techno artists. It's a bubbly and fairly funky section.
As a finale, Thomas changes gears again, and goes into a slower, poppy ending anchored by two tracks. The first is by International Pony, with a very out of tune melody. But it's oddly catchy. The second is Thomas Geiger's "Stella Dreams", a house ending with strong female vocals.
It's a very interesting, idiosyncratic mix that certainly stands out from the crowd. There are no commercial hits or anthems to make you rock out. Still, it's a good listen. If you can handle the lack of melody, go for it.
It will be out on Kompakt on April 30.

From Karaoke to Stardom - Mon Dieu Moi Aussi

This release from From Karaoke To Stardom has been out a while, but sometimes I need to let things stew a while before I can realize what they're really like. In short, this is a really cool minimal release.

On the A side is Beat Zen Square Zen Zen. As I said, it's minimal with an up and down bassline and looped bleeps as accompaniment.

B1 is Elastic Time Bubble, which I think is the best track. This time the bassline throbs and oozes, the kick drum is punchier, and the melody is twinkly but haunting.

B2 is Maguliadura. It's more like the B1 track, with another haunting melody, which is accompanied by looped strings. It's a bit more uplifting. It's not as fast as the other tracks and is a nice way to end a fine ep.

It's out now on Rrygular.
